As of August 2015, Dahlia Vertreese (“Vertreese”) began working as a labor organizer and labor relations specialist with Local 68 of the International Union of Operating Engineers.  Vertreese attended the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice and History, and a Master of Arts Degree in Sociology.   Vertreese began her professional career as an Equal Employment Specialist for big box retail; however, it was after watching an anti-labor union propaganda film that she was set upon a path to become an advocate for organized labor.

In 2003, Vertreese relocated back to New Jersey and worked as a Labor and Employment as a Paralegal with Grotta, Glassman and Hoffman, P.C.; and then as a Labor Relations Specialist at the Newark Public Schools where she continued to develop a genuine relationship with approximately nine (9) powerful labor unions.  In August 2015, Vertreese graduated from the AFL-CIO labor candidate school. Combining her experience in Labor Relations and as an educator of AP U.S. History, Sociology and AP European History, Vertreese began working as a Labor Organizer/Labor Relations Specialist for Local 68 International Union Operating Engineers.

Six months post the AFL-CIO labor candidate graduation, Vertreese won appointment to a vacant seat on the Hillside Board of Education. By December 2016, Vertreese completed the AFL-CIO organizing institute whereby she received the rank of “mastery” in 7 categories.

In January 2017, Vertreese was selected by the NJ State AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech to serve among other labor leaders in the AFL-CIO Mid-Atlantic Labor Leadership Institute (“MALLI”) with an expectation of organizational change for the labor movement in a 21st century economy.  The knowledge and experiences shared amongst her MALLI brothers and sisters encouraged Vertreese to run for and win the 2017 Mayoral election in the Township of Hillside.

Vertreese holds a certificate in Public-Sector Labor Relations from Rutgers University School of Management and Labor Relations, as well as certification in Wage and Hour, Communicating with Diplomacy and Tact from Rockhurst University and is a graduate of EMERGENJ-a burgeoning program that promotes the education and engagement of women leaders for a democratic future.

Vertreese is an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the A. Philip Randolph Institute.  She is a member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey and currently serves on the New Jersey Labor Advisory Council.  Vertreese is a member of both the Union County Central Labor Council and the Essex West Hudson Labor Council.  Dahlia is the proud wife of Derek Vertreese of 15 years and has three sons.
